# ByteDance's DeerFlow 2.0 Hits #1 on GitHub, Giving AI Agents Their Own Computer

> ByteDance's DeerFlow 2.0 is a fully open-source, self-hostable super-agent harness that gives AI a real computer — sandboxes, persistent memory, parallel sub-agents, and extensible skills included.

[DeerFlow 2.0](https://github.com/bytedance/deer-flow) is ByteDance's answer to a question the agent community has been wrestling with for two years: what does it actually take to give an AI model the infrastructure to get real work done? Not simulate it. Not role-play it. Actually do it. The answer, it turns out, is a Docker container, a filesystem, a bash terminal, persistent memory, and the ability to spawn a fleet of parallel sub-agents. That's DeerFlow , and it hit #1 on GitHub Trending the day it launched.

On February 28th, 2026, DeerFlow claimed the #1 spot on GitHub Trending. It is an open-source super agent harness that orchestrates sub-agents, memory, and sandboxes to do almost anything , powered by extensible skills. At the time of writing it sits around 68,000 stars with over 9,000 forks. The MIT license means there are zero usage restrictions , fork it, productize it, build on it commercially.

## From Research Tool to Full Runtime

Version 2.0 is a ground-up rewrite of the original framework. While the 1.x branch focused exclusively on "Deep Research" and remains available for community maintenance, all active development has shifted to the 2.0 harness architecture. This version introduces a generalized infrastructure capable of handling diverse workloads beyond research, including data pipelining, content automation, and software engineering.

Built on LangGraph and LangChain, it ships with everything needed out of the box: a virtual computer (filesystem + bash), context engineering, and model-agnostic LLM support. The name stands for **D**eep **E**xploration and **E**fficient **R**esearch **Flow** , but that undersells what 2.0 actually is. It's a runtime that treats agents as workers with their own computers, not chatbots with tool access.

## The Core Idea: Agents With Their Own Computer

DeerFlow takes a different stance: instead of handing the model a few tools, it hands each agent an entire computer. A real filesystem, a bash terminal, the ability to install packages and run code, persistent memory across sessions, and the ability to spawn a dozen sub-agents that work in parallel and report back.

This is not a simulation. The agent can create files, modify them, run scripts against them, and produce outputs you can actually download and use. That is the distinction from most agent frameworks, which essentially role-play execution.

## Five Pillars of the Architecture

* **Sub-Agents:** A lead agent plans tasks and spawns parallel sub-agents with isolated contexts, tools, and termination conditions. Each sub-agent reports back structured results, and the lead synthesizes everything into a coherent deliverable.
