# Anthropic Launches Claude Corps, Paying 1,000 Fellows $85K to Rebuild Nonprofits

> Anthropic commits $150M to place 1,000 AI-trained fellows inside US nonprofits, pairing early-career talent with mission-driven organizations for a full year

Anthropic is writing a $150 million check to answer a question the AI industry has mostly sidestepped: what happens to the workers and communities left behind as AI reshapes the economy? The answer, at least for now, is [Claude Corps](https://www.anthropic.com/claude-corps) -- a national fellowship program that trains early-career people to use Claude and embeds them inside US nonprofits for a full year, fully paid.

## Peace Corps, but make it AI

The structure is deliberately reminiscent of civic service programs.
Fellows spend 12 months full-time, in-person, helping host organizations advance their missions. The goal is twofold: host organizations get valuable tools and systems built, and fellows walk away with AI skills that will serve them throughout their careers.

The program is a three-way partnership. Anthropic funds it and leads overall strategy. [CodePath](https://www.codepath.org/) -- America's largest provider of collegiate computer science education -- acts as the fellows' official employer of record and leads programming. And Social Finance, a nonprofit and registered investment adviser, handles measurement, evaluation, and will build a longer-term financial vehicle to help the program scale.

The host list reads like a cross-section of American civic life:

- **Braven** (Chicago, IL) -- helps first-generation and lower-income students land strong first jobs
- **Code for America** (Oakland, CA) -- uses technology to improve government services
- **International Rescue Committee** (New York, NY) -- humanitarian aid for refugees and crisis-affected populations
- **RAINN** (Washington, DC) -- the nation's largest anti-sexual violence organization
- **Montgomery County Food Bank** (Conroe, TX) -- feeds families north of Houston through 100+ partner agencies
- **Reef Environmental Education Foundation** (Key Largo, FL) -- marine conservation through underwater surveys
- **Year Up United** (Boston, MA) -- workforce development for young adults
- **Goodwill Industries International** (Rockville, MD) -- job training and employment services

## What fellows actually get

Fellows receive a full-time salary of $85,000 and benefits, support from a CodePath mentor, office hours from Anthropic for technical questions, an expansive Claude token budget, and professional guidance from their manager at the host organization. Each week includes five hours of ongoing training, with the rest of their time dedicated to their host.

The eligibility bar is intentionally low.
Anyone over 18 with under two years of full-time work experience is welcome to apply, regardless of educational background. The only requirements are US work authorization, comfort working with Claude, and willingness to relocate if necessary -- with relocation support available.
There is no degree requirement. This is a deliberate design choice, not an oversight.

## The numbers that matter

The headline commitment is significant:

- **$150M** initial funding from Anthropic
- **1,000 fellows** targeted at program scale
- **$85,000/year** salary per fellow, plus benefits
- **400+ nonprofits** hosting fellows in the first 12 months
- **19 host organizations** confirmed at launch, spanning 13 states

The first cohort of 100 fellows begins in October 2026, with applications closing July 17th. Two subsequent cohorts begin in January 2027 and August 2027, with applications open on a rolling basis.

## Why Anthropic is doing this now

This is not a standalone CSR initiative.
Anthropic is launching Claude Corps alongside a broader policy framework for addressing AI's impact on work, explicitly acknowledging that the benefits of transformative AI could come at the cost of significant disruption -- and that the companies building this technology have a responsibility to make sure those benefits are widely shared.

The timing is deliberate. Anthropic's [Policy on the AI Exponential](https://www.anthropic.com/policy-on-the-ai-exponential), released the same day, includes an Economic Policy Framework that calls for governments to prepare workers for AI's impact. Claude Corps is Anthropic putting its own money behind that argument before asking anyone else to act.

The CodePath partnership is also not new. Anthropic had already partnered with CodePath to redesign its coding curriculum as AI reshapes software development, giving more than 20,000 students at community colleges, state schools, and HBCUs access to frontier AI tools. Over 40% of CodePath students come from families earning under $50,000 a year.
Claude Corps extends that existing relationship into a new, more direct form of workforce intervention.

## The real story: a template, not just a program

The $150M and 1,000 fellows are meaningful, but Anthropic is clearly signaling that this is meant to be a proof of concept for something much larger.
The ambition is for Claude Corps to scale far beyond 1,000 fellows. Anthropic plans to rigorously measure how host organizations advance their missions and how fellows develop their skills and career prospects -- to understand how Claude Corps should evolve.

Anthropic also plans to open-source some of the core technology and infrastructure that enables the program to work, so that others can build out similar initiatives toward what could be a large-scale nationwide effort. And they want to build a model that can be replicated in other countries outside the US.

The nonprofit sector has historically been the last to benefit from new technology waves, often lacking the technical talent to implement tools that for-profit companies adopt quickly. Claude Corps is a direct attempt to close that gap -- not by giving nonprofits software, but by giving them people who know how to build with it. Whether that model holds up at scale is the real experiment Anthropic is running.

For early-career people wondering where they fit in an economy being reshaped by AI, the program offers something concrete: a paid year of hands-on experience building real AI systems, with a salary that beats many entry-level tech roles, at organizations doing work that matters.
