# AIPOCH's Open Science Gives Researchers a Local AI Agent With 4,000 Stars

> AIPOCH released Open Science, an Apache-2.0 desktop workbench that runs scientific agents locally with Python notebooks, life-science connectors, and full provenance.

Scientific work has a fragmentation problem. Between chat windows, Jupyter notebooks, terminal scripts, PubMed tabs, and export folders, the reasoning behind a figure usually gets separated from the code that produced it. [Open Science](https://github.com/aipoch/open-science), a new Apache-2.0 desktop app from AIPOCH, collapses all of that into a single local workspace where an agent can read files, run code, hit scientific databases, and leave an inspectable trail behind.

The project has picked up over 4,000 GitHub stars and just added [Apodex 1.1 and 1.1 mini](https://twitter.com/Apodex%5FAI/status/2096946589503729731) as built-in model options in the v0.26.0 release.

## What it does

Open Science is an Electron desktop app where you create a project, describe a task in plain language, and let an agent read files, run code, search the web, call scientific data connectors, and return reports, tables, figures, and an inspectable activity history in one workspace. Installers ship for macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), Windows x64, and Linux. The app is Apache 2.0 licensed with no seat fees. You pay only for whatever model provider you connect.

Under the hood it runs React, TypeScript, Prisma/SQLite, and an ACP-based agent runtime. First launch runs an environment check and, if needed, installs an app-managed Claude runtime without requiring Node.js, npm, or administrator access.
